hanging in there Thanks for your kind replies. I read about coconut oil somewhere (but someone also suggested oatmeal baths!) Trouble is with my broken foot I am unable to go coconut oil shopping! I wonder too if it is not really itching him - it is a reaction to pain or something else. He scratches in different areas (usually chin and shoulder or flank) randomly.
I spent another night holding Sargie so he wouldn't keep licking and scratching. If I massaged his chest, or then even just held him pressing against his chest lightly, he stopped - at least for a while. He finally did fall asleep, then woke me having what I assume were dry heaves (no vomit). He has kept all antibiotic, food, water and ensure down and the scratching and licking as of this morning have decreased by about 90% (though occasionally he still does it for a moment). My concern now is that he is drinking way more than usual.
The vet I believe thinks he is too weak for more medicine and does not want anything to cause a recurrence of the sloughing off of intestines.
I checked the treats my friend gave him and they are all natural and made and sourced in the USA, so I feel better about that not being involved.
Pancreatitis was never mentioned...in fact because of the horrible state of the fecal sample we brought in Friday afternoon that was all the vet had tested and he did not take a blood sample that day. He said he will do that Monday, but he was very optimistic seeing him yesterday after the bloody diahrrea. I guess I am just a natural worrier, but you know, we know our dogs, and I know that behavior signals something wrong. Right now he is curled up sleeping, very much his usual M.O. - I am hoping we have passed the worst of it?????!!!!! |
