My Ruby had a beautiful full head of hair until she did the same thing. She would pull her top knot out and pull pull until there way very little hair left. I finally just gave up and ended up cutting bangs. Well its been about 7 months and it if finally long enough for a top knot and by golly she hasn't taken it out one time in the past month.
I can finally start putting some of her pretty bows back in her hair.
