And one of the first things folks need to be told when contemplating keeping intact dogs of opposite sexes in the house.
At least with large dogs we don't get that foolish belief - how-ever we still have the idiots that think a large female can protect herself from any male who wants to mate. This is an expensive disaster waiting to happen! Crate and Rotate and even separate rooms (crated) with two doors between the intact dogs is the only way to go. Separate feeding times, and exercise times. I try never to bring my female when she is in season to the vets,(if I have to it is first appointment time and leave the back way. If that is not possible I wait in the car with her until the vet is ready to see her. I will not walk her outside in public places not to mention being off lead! You track when they come into and out of season - so you know when to expect the next season. Trust the advice of breeders who keep their dogs safe from *accidental* matings and have done so for many many years.
