another thing that helps in very warm climates which I know you live in is to get their harness wet it will keep them much cooler, when we walk and it is very hot as soon as I get Lola wet she is full of energy. I use a mesh jacket type harness so that stays wet quite a while and then as we go we pour a little water over her back. I will never forgot my first time walking up that park near Gatlinburg TN, it was my first weekend away with my soon to be husband. We took Reggie my first yorkie, he was good off leash and as we began to hike up, he would run a head about 50 ft then run back to us, he did this all the way up to the top so we figured he walked the trail twice, I was in pretty good shape back then, but he was much better at it then my DH and I. Of course now I would never let my pup off leash on a trail but now I am older and wiser
