I'm with your hubby. Building a gate is very easy, and hardware is readily available at all home improvement stores. I built six gate panels and installed them when I built my own backyard fence. My only advice is don't make it too tight of a fit. You need gaps all around for the gate to swing freely, and to allow the mounting of hinges & latch.
