The reason I withhold a meal when a dog is sick is because continuing to feed if the dog has a problem such as pancreatitis will make it worse. I find that chicken and rice doesn't always cure diarrhea, and higher fiber can be better (ie sweet potato). I don't run to the vet over one loose stool if my dog is acting fine. I just skip a meal and things usually resolve quickly.
