It probably depends on the size and layout of your home.

ZoE was only actually confined to her playpen for a matter of weeks (i took her home at six weeks old), and then I opened one of the panels to the pen and left it open for her to go use her potty pads. This was the daily setup while I was home, and I only confined her when i left the house. But, my house is very very tiny. Almost my whole house would fit in just the master suite of my previous home! So wherever ZoE is, in the entire house, she isnt that far from her potty area.

I think the biggest thing early on, is setting your pup up for repeated success. The more he goes where hes supposed to, and gets praised for it, the faster he should train.
