High maintenance - no way. (You shold try having a Bichon!)
My puppy's hair is short and never tangles. I can run a comb through his hair anytime with no problems whatsoever.
I used to bath my dog once a week (when he was a pup and had terrible oily hair). But his new hair is wonderful, and he's a house dog (doesn't get dirty) and I can get by bathing him less often.
I could take my pup to a groomer, but so far I have trimmed him myself. This is a little work because he is such a wiggleworm. But, because I'm doing this at home, I don't even have to do it all at once. Often we do a little and get back to it later.
Yorkies are so different - one from the other - different sizes, different types of hair, different cuts, etc...... I am sure that grooming and upkeep is much more work for some of us than it is for others. But, for now, mine is very little work.
