The AKC allows a bitch to be bred every cycle, until that female is 12 years old. No limit! Males can be used as studs and bred until they are 12 years old....if they are used as a frequent breeder, they have to be DNA'd after so many litters are sired by that male, but there are no limitations of the number of times a dog can be bred (up until 12 years old), or the number of litters produced!
As far as not registering litters, there are many reasons some people do not register litters...when you have a breeder that runs males and females all together so that when a female turns up pregnant, they have NO idea who the daddy's are to that litter....and yes, there can be 4 puppies in the litter from 3 different sires. Now, to register that litter, you have to have all the litter, plus all the males that ran with that female, plus the female, all DNA'd, and THAT costs some chunk of money! And that is if everyone running together is the same breed!
If you got another breed running around loose in the mix, registration is questionable....I honest do not know if the AKC is now registering mutts.....if they are, then no problem, if they are not, then no papers for any pup in the litter that is DNA'd and proven to belong to the mutt! Cheaper to just not register the litter!
Some breeders will not register the litter because you have produced "outliers"....in other words, the entire litter is throwbacks and they all track to weigh 12- 18 lbs or more!! You do not want to register those dogs because you dont want those huge pups to come under your kennel name! No huge crime being perpetuated on a buyer, and the pups are sold as pets and the buyers are told WHY they are not registered.....of course, they are sold spayed/neutered so they can not possibly be used for breeding, but there is nothing nefarious going on! There are a couple more circumstances where breeders choose to not register a litter, and they are not illegal or crooked or sneaky or trying to "fly under the radar"....I am so sleepy, I can not think of them right off the top of my head.
I am just throwing the above facts out there in order to correct the record..... I do not agree with many of these practices, but there are honest people that do this.....sometimes it is one of those infamous "ooops" breedings, and the dogs are all underfoot in the house, and these people do not want to pay for all the DNA testing.....so they just do not register the litter. Nothing wicked or illegal or sneaky happening!
