I had the same problem. You need one with vertical bars. I stumbled upon a lifesaver...it's actually a ferret playpen by Marshall. I got the 8 panel and its big enough for crate, pee pad, bowls, and a few toys. They also have an 11 panel. You can arrange it in any shape you need or use it like a baby gate to block off an area. Works wonderful. My pup even got on top of the crate and still couldn't climb out. Ferret.com has them pretty cheap, but I ordered from Amazon before realizing that.
