Check with a vet school (maybe Auburn, you can call them) and call around to other vets. When I was a kid I once worked off a vet surgery for my pup, lots,of weekends, late nights, poop scooping, dog walking but it also turned out to be a summer job, and my dog got her surgery. I even washed the vets' cars! LOL,was an interesting learning/ growing up thing. I know you are recovering, but maybe there is something you could do.
