I use a fine comb and hold the hair like you would a little girls when trying to get knots out. Something else I've used and seems to help is detangling spray by Topnot..its the only one they had at Petsmart. I squirt it on the knot and then just rub the knot between my fingers to loosen it up. Seems to work. I haven't had this problem really with Sunni, but with my Shih Tzu's between groomings, under armpits (if thats what you call them on dogs, lol) Worst case scenario is get little snub nosed scissors and try to just cut the little mat out. I may be doing it all wrong, but thats how I do it
