I don't think that I have ever deliberately referred to my dogs as pets *shrugs* I might have and I have certainly answered a questioned posed like how many pets do you have - to which I normally respond I have 3 dogs and one cat (well did have 1 cat).

I hear ya. I love my pups! If I could say it better, ,,, don't take offence if others use the term pet or even the word "it"... neither are derogatory(unless their lips are curled, LOL). I like how the one response here signified the possibility that pet may have originated from a term of a loved one, a person... I haven't looked into it, I just like the response.
