Do people seriously buy these dogs and then abandon them? Is it primarily older individuals who die and no other family member takes the dog? That was always a concern of mine; if something happens to me, what happens to my dog?
I made provisions for ZoE because I sold a large home and downsized when my kids went away to college, and I had the funds from the sale to do so. Kind of ironic because four years later I went to work for a law firm that specializes in elder law and trusts, and one of our top five provisions, is providing for your pet's care after you are gone. |
Some are breeder surrenders too. My Winston was turned over to an area placement service/rescue by a breeder when he wasn't right for the show ring. Some breeders would rather turn their dogs over to rescue than to sell them cheaper than their regular pricing. Some want to avoid people looking for a cheap dog and opt for this because they know the rescue will thoroughly check out the placement and spay/neuter before placement thereby preserving their stock for their own programs.
