I think of the word pet as a generalized term of endearment for any animal one keeps in one's home as part of the family. Certainly does not diminish the animal's status! I tend to use the words dog, boy, baby, pet etc according to the context in which I use the word. But thanks for your views, never really thought deeply about the word pet before
