CDC examined the fibers and found them to be similar to textile fibers commonly used. Other sites show that parasites and fungi could produce some of the observed symptoms. Delusional parasitosis was another name used for this syndrome!
A complex disease with many associated symptoms.
Does the body produce these textile-like fibers and then expel them like a piece of glass or grow them like hair? Wonder if the fibers growing or being under the skin are what makes for the awful feelings the patients have?
