I keep them trimmed. The only thing about that is as others pointed out, it can poke their eyes. But I keep them trimmed often so that's not really an issue for me. Both mine are always in puppy cuts and they hate top knots so this seemed to be the best option for me.

Have you tried using treats? Reintroducing him to the scissor slowly with treats by just showing him the scissor and give a treat to gradually touching him with the scissor and giving him a treat. I think trying to "force" the scissor on him might be making it worse. Both mine were resistant to anything that had to do with grooming but after some time and LOTS of treats, they're pretty good now.
