I always do the butt baths when necessary too usually only with digestive upsets. Cutting any hair around that area seems to make the poop stick worse. I have always kept mine with long coats. I also believe if you have him on a good dry dog food, and not adding can or people food, his stool will be firm and the correct consistency not to be a problem at all. Also you will never have to worry about anal glands as a stool with the right consistency does this naturally.
