It is, but sometimes it is not from that at all. I went through hell trying to keep Pippi and Armani at ideal body weight. I don't give a lot of extra food to my pups and they get minimal treats. Armani and Pippi are litter mates and I am convinced it is their metabolism. The vet nutritionist said Pippi especially is an easy keeper. She could not believe how little I was feeding her to keep her from gaining.
I now home cook for them (have for some time) and the amount of food is so much more than what they had (which has made them happier) and they have maintained their weight with no problem.
I would never feed them any commercial food again.
