While I definitely agree with you in most cases, I live in a condo and my patio door just leads to a small patio. I live on the ground floor, so my patio is covered and surrounded by a 6+ foot wall. I do not take chances with my dogs. The wall had gaps at either side (to prevent flooding), so I put two small metal trellises on either side to prevent Griffy from being able to squeeze through.

I understand your concern, but I've put a lot of thought into this and have decided that it is a safe option for my dogs. I use to live in a house with a big backyard and many owl sightings. I absolutely never let my dogs outside alone there and a doggie door was definitely not an option. I would even put Griffy in a crate outside while he ate, just to be on the safe side.
