I once removed a hard vinyl "flapper". Went to a fabric store and bought heavy clear vinyl, the put it in the door as a new "flap". I cut about three vertical lines in it so it was easier to get through. It worked great. The flap was held in place by a couple screws.
Do beware of the hawk thing, we have had some sad and close call hawk stories on YT.
