Her NME did not come on immediately after vaccination so he did not say anything about that at the time. She presented with sudden blindness first. As far as my husband & I could determine it was only in one eye. Of course I took her to my vet immediately & he did a blood workup, glaucoma test etc. Thought maybe it was SARs. In the meantime I started searching the internet. Immediately when we got home from the vets she started head tilting & when I googled that canine encephalitis came up. I called the vet immediately again & I took her right back in so he could see her. The blood work was not in yet but I asked him about GME/NME & he said it was possible, I do not think he was all that familiar with it but he did start her on prednisone & told me to get her to a neurologist asap. I took her to Portland Maine which is about three hours away & they gave her an MRI to make diagnosis. At the time I was just learning about the disease & the neurologist suggested I put her down. As I investigated further & joined a GME forum I found out about the vaccinations. The neurologist said it was idiopathic/genetic which to me is a contradiction in terms since idiopathic means (no known cause)? I just feel that she did not do well with vaccinations & from what I read now there is no need to keep vaccinating them since most stay in their systems for years to life. NME/GME are autoimmune diseases wherein the immune system is reved up & attacking the body instead of protecting it. So over immunizing makes perfect sense to me. But I will never know for sure. A terribly sad lesson for me. I am still on the forum for it because I like to follow the breeds that are getting it & how successful the treatments are for putting it into remission. I wish they would concentrate on what is causing it. These poor dogs suffer so with it. |
