Tyson absolutely prefers outside, but he will use a potty pad.
Rin, my little 4lb girl, was pad trained from the very beginning and has always done very well. I have hardwood floors that can easily be wiped up, but I always keep a small rug in front of the back door and of course there is a rug in the shower. When Rin was a puppy, she mistook those small rugs for "potty pads." I watched her every second for about two days. When I would "catch" her about to pee on a rug, I said "uh huh" and took her to the potty pad. She now understands not to pee on a rug and always uses her potty pad (always in the same location). Smart girl!!!!
