I doubt your pup got enough onion to give him onion poisoning. If he continues to have those poops with that "red tinted, yellow orange mucoid membrane" around it, I would take the stool into the vet, tell them since you really cant afford to have the vet see the pup, would the vet look at the stool and see if it looks like the pup needs to be seen. They may feel sorry for you and tell you to go ahead and bring the pup in for the vet to look at.....
