| Onion/trash eating help!!! I'm desperate!!! I have a 15 pound yorkie (Mango.) My dog ate trash... Can anyone help give some opinions?
I recently got an apartment and have a roommate. I should have known better knowing how irresponsible she is (I didn't find that out til we moved in.) But we have been keeping our trash in just a trash bag in the kitchen because our little can overflows so quickly, so I figured a big bag would be a better option til we buy a big trash can. I'm so stupid... We made beef stew which had onion, potatoes (red), carrots, celery, beef, and beef broth. I put all the "throw away" veggies in a plastic bag and tied it and put it in the trash, thank goodness, so that never got eaten thank goodness. That was where the majority of the onion was/raw veggies. I had a bowl of soup on Thurs, and didn't eat it all, left some onion, potato, and carrots in the bowl, dumpted it in the trash since we don't have a garbage disposal. Stupid me. Mango was showing some interest in the trash, so I decided to gate off the kitchen and bring his food/water bowl in the living room. I told my roommate to keep the gate up so he wouldn't go in there, but she didn't, so when I got back home, he had eaten whatever was in there. Probably a few decent sized bites of onion, and who knows what else.
Thursday night he had huge poop, very soft and you could hardly get it with a bag, and threw up a lot of chunks, and continued to have accidents that night (diarrhea and cried when it wouldn't come out.) I called the 24 hour emergency vet hospital, they thought he would be fine if he just got what was in a bowl of soup...but they said if he continues to have trouble Friday to bring him in. Well he was okay all day on Friday, no poop at all...ate his normal dog food with rice. Friday night, he woke me up three times to go outside and had diarrhea and threw up in bed. He looked so guilty, and both nights after the accidents, he slept on my floor and usually whines if he can't be in bed with me, but looked miserable. Saturday (today) he is still having little bits of diarrhea, but has a yellow/orange membrane type mucus around it, MAYBE a bit of a red tint? I'm not sure, I'm a worried mama, and I don't have a lot of money, no college degree (yet) and I work as a nanny, so I'm trying to avoid the vet for blood work at all costs unless Mango really needs to be seen. Today I took away his normal dog food, and just giving him rice, but he won't eat it (which isn't uncommon, he's a picky eater, so I melted a teaspoon of PB which usually gets him to eat, and he has no interest in that or water, he usually doesn't drink a lot anyways, but i'm still worried. I'm just hoping that whatever he ate just made him have an upset stomach and doesn't have onion poisoning....his gums look fine, no skin rashes that I see, his urine is dark yellow which is normal for him. He seems tired, maybe a bit more drowsy than usual, but maybe not? He is a lap dog, and will lay on me for hours or lay on the couch for hours while I paint or use the computer, happily on his back with his belly in the air lol.
I need my mind to be put to ease, I will take him in if I have to, but i want to wait until monday if so because of weekend emergency fees...any experience with this? |
