The county offered free micro-chipping, compared to the $75 my vet charges (she absolutely supported taking Piper to the county facility), and at that time I went ahead and licensed Pipe--sorta as a thanks for the micro chip. We need to renew license yearly and I believe the fee is $7 or $11. I, too, think licensing is a way of checking that animal is spayed/neutered and current w/shots. Here in Sparks, NV, the process was easy, fast, and cheap--thank goodness!
