Heartguard Plus does NOT control tapeworms, but it does control heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms. You will have to get medicine from the vet to get rid of the tapeworms.
I don't know of any tapeworm preventatives, but they are carried by fleas, so if you can control fleas and keep your dog from eating an infected flea, that will help prevent tapeworms. Here is a WebMD article:
