Learning and figuring it out.
For treats, I like to feed freeze dried chicken from Stella & Chewey's or whomever and give carrots, brocoli, blueberries, and apples as treats. I'm still educating myself so idk what is best for your little ones but am happy to help in any way if I can! |
Thank you so much. That is so nice of you to offer to do that. But this might be a little complicated. Daisy is a 17 pound Yorkie and Teddy Bear is a 17 pound Yorkie/Bichon mix. They are both 11 years old and just slightly overweight.
Daisy had elevated liver enzymes on her blood work in Aug 2014.
ALP 690 (normal range is 20-150)
ALT 348 (10 - 118)
He wanted to find out why so he did an ultrasound and it came out ok. She was tested for cushings but that test was ok too. Vet did not rule out Atypical Cushings.
She is on Denamarin daily and a special liver diet. We started her out on Royal Canine Hepatic liver diet but she didn't seem to like it. We tried Hills l/d Hepatic liver diet and she seemed to like it so that is what we are feeding her.
On her next blood test her liver values had gone down after being on denamarin and the special diet.
Oct 2014
ALP 574
ALT 128
We started adding green beans to her food to make it more palatable because she loves green beans. Then we added boiled chicken. She got itchy and developed a skin infection. Vet said he suspects she is allergic to chicken. Go back to square one. Hepatic diet only and nothing added. Skin infection cleared up with antibiotics but big scabs came off and left bald spots. Hair is slowly growing back in. Had another blood test and her readings were

ALP 840
ALT 113
The vet said that only her ALP levels were high and did not concern him as much as if it had been her ALT. They have not been able to figure out why ALP levels more high but one of the vets thinks possibly Atypical Cushings. They said we may never know for sure.
We were feeding Teddy Bear canned food and kibble with chicken. We changed to Lamb and rice so that when Daisy gets to his food and eats it, it won't be chicken. We looked at virtually every can of every kind of food in petsmart and only found one with no chicken mentioned on the label. Nutro lamb and rice. We are giving him science diet dry since he was trying to eat Daisys science diet food. Teddy bear seems to be allergic to corn as it makes him itch terribly.
So here are the questions I would have for Daisy...
Between Royal Canine and Science Diet l/d hepatic food, is either one better than the other?
Is there any place that I can find a recipe for a low protein liver diet that I can cook myself that my vet would approve?
Daisy does not want to eat her food anymore. She wants Teddy's food. She has gotten to it three times this week when we let our guard down and didn't notice. It gave her gas and tummy aches.
Teddy Bear
What is the best food I can find for him. It can't have chicken or corn. All of the vets we have been to, 3 at the current place, and two at our previous vet office, said they do not need to be on a grain free diet and they believe that grain free is just a fad. I don't know if that is a Midwest thing or what but I was going to try Fromm at one time but didn't because the vets discouraged the grain free diet.
I would love to have them both on the same food that they both can tolerate and would be ok for Daisy's liver, her chicken allergy and Teddy Bears corn allergy.
Sorry this is so long and detailed but we have been through the gamut over the years trying different foods. I am so worried about all of the recalls and worry that with mine being older, they would not be able to fight off the effects of contaminated food.
