We called them cowlicks growing up in Iowa. It's because it looks like a cow licked you on the head and it made the hair stand up in a patch. I've heard people call it "bed head" as well. When I was a kid (and had hair on my head), I had a cowlick every morning when I woke up, and I had to slick it down with water.
