Sure they can. My parents have a black lab and I have 2 Biewers (1 I co-own) as well as a Japanese Chin / Poodle mix. All three of them get so excited to go to "Grandma and Grandpa's" house to play with the big dogs (they also have an English Setter). Of course size is always a worry, so I would keep a close eye on them when playing, but they definitely get along. Some dogs are just slower at adjusting to new additions. I'm sure with a little time they will become best buds.
