There is no way I could carry ZoE in a bag hanging from my hand...she is way too heavy! I have three large kwigy bos and alternate between which one I use based on what I'm wearing.
I always keep Zo tucked safely under my arm, while in the bag. If I set the bag in a shopping trolley, I use a carabiner clip to attach the bag to the cart, so no one could grab the bag I run (I do the same thing with my regular big purse, although I usually shop with a crossbody bag that I never take off). A little paranoia is good, if if keeps you safe.
