There are products to kill fleas in the yard, bugs in general. Just make sure you let it dry for at least 24 hours before allowing your dog out on the grass (or after a rain to soak it in, if it is a dry product).
We never picked up fleas in our yard or neighborhood. We have picked up a few at the office park where we walk because a lot of traveling dogs stop there.
