That's how it's always worked out for us (by us, I mean me and I suppose my ex-husband, my parents and my brother and SIL). The females seem to bond more with the men in the house, and the males are loyal to the women in the house. My Rosco, who was my first dog, was absolutely my shadow for his 13 years. I got him around the same time I started dating my (now ex) husband. My ex was always jealous that Rosco never paid him any mind at all. He would reluctantly listen to him if he called him, lol. Rosco would look up at me, as if to say, "sooo, do I really have to listen to him?"
Rosco's niece was my parent's dog, and she was absolutely attached to my dad. Now they have a male and he cannot get enough of my mom.
Between all of my family we've owned a dozen dogs and while there are exceptions, it does seem the gender rule still stands most of the time.
