I've been through this with Lacey and am now going through it with the new pup, Pepper Jack. My two cats had never encountered a dog before I got Lacey. Rusty, the tabby, hid for weeks, only coming out at night when Lacey was in her crate. Silkie, my huge Maine Coon was curious at first, then Lacey made a sudden move, Silkie hissed, and Lacey started barking. Silkie ran for the hills as she didn't know what this barking thing was. Two years later, Silkie will lay on the couch curled up beside Lacey and they are good friends. Rusty, wants nothing to do with Lacey and still keeps out of her way. Now in comes Pepper Jack. Silkie now knows about dogs and has no fear. Pepper chases, chews on and barks at Silkie. Silkie gets enough and will swat him. Pepper will cry out and back off. After several episodes of getting smacked, Pepper keeps a distance, but still barks at her like crazy. Silkie likes to lay close to Pepper Jack's pen and watch him. I sometimes think she is taunting him. Rusty is just annoyed that there are now two of those barking creatures in the house. |
