It is rated 3.5 stars, "not" grain-free and he does well on it, but, I am adding a new addition to the family soon (another biewer which is a retired stud coming from Alabama) and he is on grain-free. Was thinking of transitioning them both to grain-free but the brand I am interested in is a Bison & Pea formula which is rated 4.5 stars with 30% protein. It is also not outrageously priced. My thought is that if your dog does well on lamb and rice, then there is no reason to switch. I have my adult dogs on varying amounts of protein and honestly the quality of the amino acid profile of the food matters more than the actual % of protein. In the case of your bison and pea blend, you are not able to tell from the bag whether the protein % is coming from the peas or the bison. There is a lot of protein in peas. But, your lamb and rice formula is probably giving you most of the protein from the lamb since rice has little protein in it. Do you see what I mean?
Grain free is great for some dogs, but others really do just fine on grains!
Good luck w/ your new addition!
