You might not be far fetched in the over protective idea. He might be feeling like he needs to watch out for you two more because the rest of your "pack" is away or he might be feeling more anxious for the same reason and don't feel as secure. Or most likely both. He probably does notice those sounds, perhaps not as prominently, when everyone else is around, but when the pack is together there's more a secure feeling and probably takes cues from the majority.
My Kimchi used to not bark at things, but started to doing it because her older sissies do it.
