hmm, he may be getting slightly congested suddenly and is clearing his throat or perhaps he's having allergies? Another thing might be that he has got a little something sort of stuck in his throat that he perhaps breathed in? My girl is like a vacuum sometimes and she'll get the hairs from our other dogs up her nose and throat. Could be something along the floors that's irritating his throat, maybe try doing a good clean sweep and see if that helps.
