Gosh I feel like we kept Toki in a crate while we were out until she was at least 8-10 months (?) or so. After that, we still kept her confined to a small area (like the kitchen/dining room in our apartment). Even at over three years old now, we still keep her in an x-pen with a cover while going out. Gives her plenty of room to sunbathe, play with her toys, have a water dish, and a cozy little bed. She loves it and knows to hop right in her pen as we are leaving when we tap on the top of it!

Teddy has pretty much had free run of our place after living with us for a couple weeks (he was around 10 months old at the time) and we were sure he was reliable in terms of potty training. He's very mild and non-destructive (unlike Toki the troublemaker). The worst thing Teddy will do is knock over folded laundry to make a nest to nap in! I can deal with that lol! I guess it just depends on how reliable with potty training and not destructively chewing your pup is without your supervision.
