My vet said to be very careful when using q-tips to clean the inside canal of the dog's ears bc it's L shaped. So the q-tip should be angled straight & do not bend it. http://www.peteducation.com/images/articles/ear.gif

So it's best to squeeze some ear cleaner in there, massage it & let them shake all the gunk off. Then wipe away w/a cotton ball.

Not sure if those are safe!
We use Zymox ear cleaner after Bella's bath to help dry out her ears, and wipe off the excess with a cotton ball. We've never had to use a Q-Tip--that sounds dangerous.
