When they were young long rides made them sick (by long I mean more than a couple miles, even then they panted like crazy). I learned to carry wet wipes, paper towels and plastic bags. My vet suggested Dramamine and that seemed to work. Then we got a large Snoozer and the first long trip between NJ and SC we gave them the med and put them in the seat. They settled down quickly. On the trip back, we were in a hurry and I forgot to give the med. again they settled in, no vomiting or panting. They have been fine ever since, all comfy and safely strapped into their seat.
We stopped about every three hours to change drivers and always found a place for them to potty and take a long walk.
We ate on the go because we wouldn't leave them in the car. Either my husband or I would go in pick something up and if we could find a bench we all ate outside. We took their blankets, grooming supplies, toys, bowls, food and water with us and of course their heartworm and flea and tick meds if we were away long. Check their tags and make sure your (their) microchip is up to date.
We also put the bring fido app on our phones which can help find dog friendly hotels and vets.
Oh yes, and plenty of poop disposal bags.
