I'd buy a car seat, cover the seat with a blanket, and cover the car seat with a blanket. Bring extra blankets too. Lola used to thow up during long-ish car rides.
If you buy a car seat he definatly needs a harness, don't attach it to a collar.

If he's a problem eater I'd bring some cooked chicken and rice for him to eat. Lola won't eat dog food when we're not home. Maybe get some nutrical incase he won't eat anything.
Also bring bottled water, you don't want to risk upsetting his stomach. I use a small tupperware container for water when we're out.
