Dogs should be restrained while in a car in such a way that if there is an accident they do not become ballistic missiles ! Dogs in laps and loose tend to not survive car accidents. (Much like infants being held on airplanes). Also in case of an accident when the police open the doors unrestrained dogs tend to run off if they are scared and they may run into traffics or not come to the police or emergency people.

Car seats with harnesses and restraints that attach to the seat belt or crates that are restrained with the seat belt are said to be the best.

Starting them young with traveling makes it a lot better when they get older.
