I agree with Brittany that you have to take into account a dog's activity level and metabolism. Also depends on what foods you feed. Some kibble brands are more nutrient dense/more calories per cup.

For instance, when Max ate Orijen, a very dense kibble, he got a lot less of it than the Fromm he eats now. There is over a 100 calorie per cup difference between the two.
