I know what a courier/dog nanny is when shipping a dog to it's new home, but, I am curious as to how it works as in financially?

I was recently quoted by a breeder who, is giving me his retired biewer stud, a cost of $425 from NE Alabama to SE PA. He even thought that was high so he is looking into other options.

How is money transferred? Do I pay the breeder? Pay the courier directly? What safeguards should I put in place to protect myself?
