Both the original post and the snopes expanded version are very good advice.
Being aware is the most important thing. This also goes for activity around your home. I'm part of a neighborhood watch group, and it is nice to know that my neighbors and I all keep our eyes open to what goes on in our block. We also have names and contact info of the neighbors, and we watch out for each other, and have great communication and cooperation of police. We have our own neighborhood watch Yahoo group, so we can quickly and easily notify all participating neighbors of any concerns.
Another helpful service of the police department here is they will come to your home and evaluate safety factors and make recommendations, such as trimming scrubbery near the house, adding motion activated security lights, security cameras (yes, even the fake ones are a deterrent), and my favorite "get a dog". They say even a small dog that barks is about as good as an alarm, and I've got that covered times three. My pups are the best alarm system around; they tell me when someone is in the yard, not just in the house.
