I would recommend doing a picture frame or two first. It will help you get used to a technique that you are comfortable with before you tackle a big project like a dresser or headboard. There are lots of paints that "claim" to stick to preexisting finishes, but I am always more comfortable doing some sanding first but depending on the color of your furniture now, you can take advantage of that for your distressing. There are just so many ways. I really like Ann Sloan Chalk Paint though. Love the finish it gives.
