Glands can become impacted or infected for a variety of reasons. If your groomer is manually expressing Max's glands, I would make sure the groomer is doing it correctly.

It certainly sounds like it is his anal glands. as was stated if teh groomer doesn't do this correctly it can most certainly cause.

My groomers do not do this to my girl's, as I don't allow it. If there isn't a problem there is no reason at for a groomer to be doing this.
