Could be impacted/infected anal glands. I would take Max to the vet ASAP to have it checked out. Glands can rupture causing more problems, and the condition is painful.
Glands can become impacted or infected for a variety of reasons. If your groomer is manually expressing Max's glands, I would make sure the groomer is doing it correctly.
