Like Gemy said and I agree have your vet do a total check up. We did full x-Rays of joints and back etc before we started. And like has been said start slow. If you start in a beginners agility class they will not over do things for your dog. That being said, no one know your dog better than you, so be ready to call it when you think your dog has had enough.
There is a group called TDAA ( teacup dog agility association). They have trials that are for under 20" dogs only. However a small dog can still compete in any AKC trial as well. My feeling is, if Cali loves it, we are into it, if she ever decides it is not fun then we are done. She was a conformation dog when I got her, but she was going to be too small to breed. We did obedience then rally, but she got bored with rally. Agility is rowdy and loud and she immediately loved it. She was going though getting over a vicious hawk attack and had some anxiety going on and agility took her through all of that in flying colors and much faster than I thought. Agility gives dogs lots of confidence.
So, size does not matter, if the dog is sound, and enjoys the activity |
That is such a wonderfull attitude! I adore seeing folks out walking with their pups and playing games. There is a sport of discus throwing that you and your dog can do. In our close by park they have a set up a mini course, and sometimes I see folks and their dogs going through that. I don't know too much about it, but it looks like grand fun.
I am so glad to hear she got over that hawk attack! Agrr danger from the skies is not something we automatically think of! But you guys here on YT alerted me to this, so I was kind of ready when I saw those IDK exactly what large birds they were, maybe turkey vultures or something, definitely circling into where Razzle and my Blackies were swimming!
Are you two still doing agility - if so I'd love to see some pics
