I would drive a distance and go to another vet for a second opinion.
Did your vet say why he needed dog food? If he is missing vitamins and minerals, you can add a supplement such as Balance It to human food. I could even grind up dog kibble and mix it in with his favorite food. I can't imagine a vet thinking its okay for a small old dog should go 4/5 days without food.
